The Jazz Department at Westlake High School features two big bands: Jazz Band and Jazz Ensemble. These ensembles focus on the study and performance of jazz and modern music and are comprised of musicians from all grade levels. The Jazz Ensemble has won multiple awards in its long history. At the Temple Jazz Festival the group has consistently received awards for Superior Performance. In 2013, the group placed 2nd at the Longhorn Jazz Festival. Most recently, the Jazz Ensemble placed first in 6A competition and was named Oustanding Band at the 2017 Kingsville Jazz Festival. The Jazz Ensemble also has a long history of developing talented Area Jazz Band and All-State Jazz Musicians.
Jazz Band meets after school from November through the end of the school year. Membership is by audition in the Spring Semester. Students in the Jazz Band work towards learning basic jazz vocabulary, styles and improv skills. This group performs at the annual Spring Jazz Concert, festivals, and is active around the community.
Jazz Ensemble meets year-round during the school day. Membership is by individual audition in the Spring Semester. The Ensemble focuses primarily on continuing the development of advanced skills needed to perform the many forms of jazz music at a high level. The Jazz Ensemble performs at school concerts, festivals, and is active in and around the community.
Westlake Jazz is committed to bringing quality performances and experiences to the Westlake Community. Ensembles and students of the Westlake Jazz Department are available to book for community/private events between the months of November and May of each school year.
